Whether you’re visiting Oxford or you live here, you should definitely consider a trip to the market town of Witney. You may only want to head to there for a few hours shopping, however if you fancy spending a little longer then here are my tips for 24 hours in Witney, Oxfordshire, the ninth post in the Exploring Oxfordshire series.
What To Do
As a market town shopping is a fantastic option in Witney. There is a fantastic market on Thursdays and Saturdays, fantastic locally grown food produce was on offer the day I was there and it was a joy to see such a selection.
Marriott’s Walk is the local shopping centre made up of the usual chain stores.
However if you are interested in shopping I would recommend that you go in search of the local, independent businesses, there are a fantastic selection of clothes shops, fashion accessories, homewares and artists all of whom are creating, designing and making and should be supported.
Head just out of Witney to Cogges Manor Farm for fantastic family fun, whether you head for coffee and cake or you go in and spend time exploring, meeting and feeding their menagerie of gorgeous farm animals.
Where to Eat & Drink
Despite the fact that Witney is not the largest place there is an abundance of places to eat and drink. Pubs, coffee shops and restaurants. All offering a variety of foods and beverages for any tastes.
For a relaxed drink and lunch head to The Eagle Vaults, if all you want is a coffee then Coffeesmiths is definitely the place to go, but if you fancy a nice meal and a cocktail (or two) then I would recommend The Fleece.
Where to Stay
I stayed at The Blue Boar, a friendly and relaxed pub/restaurant with 19 rooms available. The double room I had cost £110.00 but thanks to a lovely discount from booking.com it actually only cost me £60.00
With breakfast included and a lovely en-suite double room (with a bath and shower) I would say that it is well worth the money considering the location. It is also by far one of the cheapest rooms I could find for spending 24 hours in Witney.
A nicely decorated and furnished room, well-lit and airy. With all of the usual amenities (coffee making facilities, mini bar, iron, TV and toiletries)
The menu available is a fantastic way to start the day. Pastries, cereals and toast as well as a great hot food selection. Their eggs royale are perfect.
Getting There
From Oxford City Centre: The S1 & S2 both stop in Witney, leaving Oxford from George Street.
A single fare costs £4.20
