There’s nothing I enjoy more than curling up with a good book, whether I’m in an armchair at home or settled in a coffee shop with a gallon of my favourite caffeinated beverage. Wandering around a bookshop is also something I like spending time doing, especially in a new city. It can be a great way to escape miserable weather or enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. Here are 5 bookshops in Rotterdam you should visit.
5 Bookshops in Rotterdam You Should Visit
Boekhandel Snoek
Boekhandel Snoek is a great advert for the city, selling books by local authors and photographers and also about the city itself. Besides an extensive collection of fiction and nonfiction, Boekhandel Snoek also sells magazines, postcards, DVDs amongst many other products.
Bosch en De Jong
Located inside the Fenix Food Factory, this cosy shop offers the latest in English and Dutch literature, children’s books, cook books and a wide variety of books on Rotterdam.
Oosterboekhandel J. Amesz
Comprised of three storeys stacked full of books, this bookstore has been around since 1886 and is known for its personal touch, locals have said that the staff will often have learnt your name should you visit more than once and offer personalised advice.
Boekhandel van Gennep
This was a shop recommended to me during my visit to Rotterdam, ideal for lovers of literature, photography, design and cook books. There are regular author readings and other events.
Donner
This bookshop really is the pride of Rotterdam, purchased by a big chain that unfortunately went bankrupt in 2014. Due to a successful crowdfunding campaign, Donner was able to relocate to its current location. It’s now a proudly independent and well stocked bookshop.

This is actually the cutest post, it literally incorporates everything I love – books, Holland, and cool quirky little places to see. Oosterboekhandel J. Amesz sounds the best to me, I adore shops where it is all so personal that even the staff remember your name. I found an awesome bookstore in Aberystwyth that housed all these old editions of books and was adorable, but every time I would go back the same member of staff would ask what my name was and what I studied :)))
