It happens once a year and it’s the perfect excuse to stock up on lots of chocolate and sweets, wear fab costumes and hide behind a cushion whilst watching a scary movie. It is also a great time to travel, so here are 5 places to celebrate Halloween.

Salem, Massachusetts, USA

You can visit Salem anytime during the month of October and get the full Halloween experience. Visitors here should expect guided tours of haunted and infamous spots, trial and hanging re-enactments, fireworks, parades and a witch’s circle. On the night of Halloween there are magic shows, witches balls, séances, fireworks and more to choose from.

Transylvania, Romania

The entire country of Romania exudes a creepy vibe, with is stunning Gothic architecture and enveloping forests. However it’s the impressive Bran Castle that draws most visitors, as it was once said to be the home of Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s famous Dracula. Today the castle is open to the public and nothing seems creepier than touring through Halloween night, learning the truth about the terrifying legends.

Oaxaca, Mexico

The Day of the Dead is a three day celebration that begins October 31st each year. Each city and town in Mexico offers a different way of celebrating Day of the Dead. In Oaxaca, near Acapulco the streets are transformed into a huge festival where costumed people visit cemeteries and the town is decorated with skulls, skeletons and flowers.

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

After Mardi Gras, Halloween is the second most celebrated time in the city. Combine the city’s reputation for voodoo with some of the best-haunted and paranormal tours in the world and the answer is an incredible Halloween experience.

Whitby, UK

Whitby, of course, is a gorgeous fishing town on the North Yorkshire coast with all the charms that you need to have a wonderful traditional seaside holiday. However, it is also a town of numerous ghost stories, shipwrecks, legends and home to chapters of the Dracula story.
