Staying in hostels tend to be the go-to choice for many travellers who wish to save money during their escapades. However for me they just don’t make for an enjoyable experience.Â
I’ve realised over time that I have a specific type of accommodation that I love and that the typical place that many people would choose are not in this category and that actually I hate staying in hostels.
5 Reasons Why I Hate Staying in Hostels
The Privacy
(or lack of) Maybe it’s because I was an only child, but I don’t do well when it comes to sharing rooms. Dealing with late night talkers, snorers, and all sort of other unnecessary going on are not what I want around me when I’m trying to sleep.
I know you can book private rooms but the shared bathroom situation doesn’t make up for it.
The Beds
Surely no grown adult actually enjoys sleeping in bunk beds? Stupidly small ladders, rock hard mattresses, and the distinct possibility of bedbugs. No thanks.
The NoiseÂ
When it sounds as though your bed is in a nightclub the chances are you’re not going to get much sleep. I’m not a sprightly young thing – I need my sleep. If I want a late night or an early start during my travels it’s usually because I’ve enjoyed a meal or what to watch a sunrise, not because I have truly horrendous music thumping inside my skull.
The People
This might seem a little harsh but during the few times I have stayed in hostels I have come across some truly awful people.
The conversations involving one-upmanship over who is the better traveller, the incessant chatter and disturbances in the night, the general lack of consideration for other people and their belongings. When all people want to do is travel they shouldn’t have to put up with other people behaviour.
The Atmosphere
Not all hostels are the same and I wouldn’t say that they all lack character but considering they are all designed to be cheap, basic types of accommodation with a large proportion of their customers being young backpackers, they are not my idea of a relaxing, comfortable place to stay.
I’ll admit that I’ve only had a few experiences of staying in hostels, but mostly they have been unenjoyable and left me feeling exhausted and uncomfortable.

I know what you mean about hostels, I definitely couldn’t stay there for a long term holiday but maybe for short term it’s not so bad. I’ve been ok with the hostels we’ve had for WMGT but maybe that’s different aha. I definitely prefer the luxury of a nice hotel when travelling!

I only managed to go to the first WMGT and I admit that was a lovely hostel but otherwise the ones I’ve stayed in have not been great.
