Moreton-in-Marsh is a small picturesque market town found in the Evenlode Valley within the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire. With just twenty-eight miles from Oxford it is easy to spend a day in Moreton-in-Marsh.
How to Spend a Day in Moreton-in-Marsh
Getting to Moreton-in-Marsh
Travelling from Oxford to Moreton-in-Marsh is super simple. It’s just a thirty-five minute journey by train and for less than £20 return it’s not going to break the bank.
Things to Do in Moreton-in-Marsh
If shopping is your thing and you want to support some independent businesses then Moreton-in-Marsh is a perfect destination for a day out. I didn’t actually count the number of antique shops in this town (there are at least four on the High Street alone) but just exploring these could keep you busy for a few hours. There is also The Toy Shop (which is an Aladdin’s cave of toys, board games and jigsaw puzzles) a pet shop, and a couple of lovely charity shops that are well worth visiting. Another shop which I loved was Sophie Oliver – a beautiful jewellery store which also offered a lovely selection of accessories.
Head a couple of miles out of Moreton-in-Marsh and visit the Batsford Arboretum, a large privately-owned garden displaying a wide variety of wildlife and unique trees, with beautiful little waterfalls, statues and bridges. Next door to the Arboretum is the Cotswold Falconry Centre, although as I’m not a bird lover I didn’t pay a visit.
Places to Eat/Drink
You definitely won’t go hungry if you want to spend a day in Moreton-in-Marsh. Whether you fancy a quick bite to eat or a full three course meal you’ll definitely be able to find something to suit your tastes.
For those light lunches there’s a wide range of options including The Marshmallow, Victoria Coffee House or Yellow Brick Café, but I would definitely recommend Martha’s Coffee House – they offer a delicious range of toasted sandwiches and a wonderful homely atmosphere.
For dinner there are a few places in Moreton-in-Marsh that offer impressive menus, the one that got my attention was at The Black Bear Inn and I definitely wasn’t disappointed by the calamari followed by the beef and ale pie.
