Running this travel blog has been great for the last 18 months, it’s given me back the passion for writing and boosted those creative juices that I thought I’d lost years ago. However as a part time blogger and someone who only travels a few times a year it can be really easy to run out of ideas. However, since I started blogging I’ve discovered a number of ways of overcoming this problem. So here are 7 ways for beating writer’s block as a travel blogger.
Writer’s Block. We’ve all been there. You’ve made a fresh mug of coffee, settled into a comfy chair and opened your laptop or notebook, clicked on the ‘Add Post’ button or picked up a pen… and then nothing. You’re staring at that blank page or open word document but unable to think of a single word to write.
Beating Writer’s Block as a Travel Blogger
Always Have a Travel Plan
I don’t mean that you always have to have a flight booked. If you’re lucky enough to have a job that gives you regular weekends off then make sure you fill them with plans.
Why not book a weekend away every 6-8 weeks, or ensure you have a full day out planned every 2-3 weeks.
You really don’t have to go on a plane to the other side of the world to be a travel blogger and come up with content.
Never Have a Blank Page
Every single time you book a trip away begin planning your related posts. Start researching your destination and start thinking about what you want to write about. Accommodation, restaurants, places to get coffee, things to do, packing tips etc.
Each time you think of something create a new post, give it a title, make a note of how many photos you might include, and list some bullet points on what you might include in the post. This will mean that you already have posts planned and drafted for when you return from your trip.
Don’t forget, these don’t have to be the final posts, you might return from your trip and completely change what you want to write about. The idea is that you don’t just sit staring at an empty page waiting for inspiration to grab hold.
Carry a Notebook Everywhere
Whether you blog about your local area or you’re heading off on a fab trip abroad, make sure you always have a notebook. You could use the notes function in your phone, but I always find I can be more creative and ideas flow a lot easier if I have a pen and paper in my hand. Whichever way you do it, being able to make notes quickly can be a hell of a lot easier than trying to remember things hours later.
You might be in a brilliant new café and want to remember the name or you want to simply jot down your thoughts for the day.
Change Your Environment
If sitting at home means that you find yourself easily distracted, then go somewhere else. Head to a park or a coffee shop. Turn off your phone, do a spot of people-watching, try writing about your immediate environment, anything to keep those creative juices flowing.
You’ll soon find that you become inspired enough to write some brilliant content and found a great method for beating writer’s block as a travel blogger.
Sort and Edit Photos
Feeling uninspired or short of ideas on what content to produce next? Why not rummage through your old photos, pick ones that you haven’t edited and posted before and find the common theme.
Read Other Blogs
I should emphasise that this does not refer to copying but being inspired. Check out some of your favourite bloggers, if they have a post “Places to Have Brunch in Leeds” why not write one on your hometown.
Join Facebook Groups
If you join the right Facebook Groups you’ll find a constant stream of people looking for ideas and recommendations of things to do in specific destinations. If you see a question or request regarding your hometown or local area, don’t just share the existing posts you have, but write more. For example, if someone ask about the free things to do in your city why not go out and spend a weekend finding and doing them.
These are my tips, do you have any recommendations for beating writer’s block as a travel blogger?
Let me know in the comments.

Yesss this post could not have come at a better time! I’m currently struggling as to what to post next as I haven’t travelled in so long, but honestly I feel inspired to take a random trip to Scotland now lol. I’ve been reading a lot of other people’s blogs but it’s literally just making me jealous haha. My go-to plan is to watch inspiring travel movies, I don’t know why but they always jolt something inside me.
Amy;
Wandering Everywhere
Great! Thanks!
It’s why I started writing about my local area – not only did it give me things to do and places to go on my weekends off, but it also gave me content.
Writing a travel blog when you only travel a few times a year really does make you think about being a bit more creative.
I’m sure you could probably get a blog post out of your favourite travel inspired movies too.
I loved the one you wrote on wanderlust inspired books.
