Marrakech is a photographer’s paradise. With vibrant souks, historic medinas, and stunning landscapes, every corner offers a fascinating perspective and a unique story. Marrakech is the vibrant heart of Morocco, renowned for its explosion of colours. However, I wanted to try something a bit different by exploring the opportunities for striking black and white photography, stripping away colour and allowing the focus to be on contrasts, textures, and compositions, revealing a different view of this ancient city. I therefore grabbed an old film camera and set out see what happened.

Black and White Photography in Marrakech

The medina of Marrakech is a maze of narrow streets and alleys, where light and shadow contrast beautifully. Early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is low, is the perfect time to capture high-contrast images, with light filtering through the wooden screens and latticework creating dramatic patterns that are ideal for black and white photography.

One of the most captivating aspects of Marrakech is the abundance of textures and patterns. The souks, with their array of woven textiles and handcrafted goods, offer a treasure trove for black and white photography. Without the distraction of colour, you can focus on the detailed patterns of a Berber rug or the worn textures of an ancient door.

Marrakech is a city full of character, and its people are a significant part of its charm. Black and white photography is particularly effective for portraits, as it highlights facial expressions and emotions. It is also so important that when photographing locals to be respectful and ask for permission, or at least not be glaringly obvious.

Everyday scenes in Marrakech, from bustling markets to quiet alleyways, are full of photographic potential. Black and white photography can turn a simple scene into a compelling narrative. Capture the flow of people in Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the intricate movements of craftsmen at work, or the serene moments of children playing in the streets. These candid shots often reveal the true spirit of the city.
