Oxford’s Covered Market is home to a large number of specialist independent traders, each selling a variety of goods. The market dates back to the 1770s and has always been an attraction for locals and visiting tourists who come from far and wide to soak up the building’s history.
Oxford’s Covered Market officially opened in November 1774 and is still active today. It started as a solution to clearing ‘untidy, messy and unsavoury stalls’ from the main streets of the city.
Today the covered market is still home to numerous traders, around half of which are food retailers, including traditional market shops such as greengrocers and butchers.
There are now gift shops, bakeries and sandwich shops. Over time some of the shop sizes have expanded so there are actually less businesses in the covered market than in the past. It is a bustling area, especially at the weekends and in the run-up to Christmas.
Many of the businesses within Oxford’s Covered Market are family owned, having been passed on through the generations, each offering a very personal and bespoke customer service.
