If you love architecture, Rotterdam is definitely worth a visit. In the city centre, historic buildings sit alongside hypermodern skyscrapers. Whatever the reason for your visit to the city you should definitely spend some time discovering the architecture of Rotterdam.
The city centre, which was largely destroyed during the Second World War, is now a patchwork of architectural styles. As a result of the bombings, very few historic buildings remain in the centre of Rotterdam. Nevertheless, there are still a few that can be found.
The city council’s decision to depart from traditional architecture in 1940 was radical. Buildings like the Groothandelsgebouw, the Euromast and the Bijenkorf are all perfect examples from that time.Â
In the 1970s the population of people living in Rotterdam was relatively low, the decision was therefore made to build more homes in the centre. Examples of this development are the buildings around the Oude Haven with the renowned Cube Houses. The permanent breakthrough of the high-rise followed along with the Erasmusbrug as a new city icon. The skyline was rejuvenating and thanks to the architecture of Rotterdam it was acquiring the image of a global city,Â
Rotterdam has been busy the last few years. Many new towers have arisen, and many new iconic buildings designed. Not as tall but no less iconic are the Central Station and the Markthal.
There is a distinct feeling that Rotterdam will never be finished, as construction cranes continue to appear across the skyline. Residential buildings and towers are on the increase, along with the demand for new offices, hotels and cultural institutions.Â

You’ve captured Rotterdam well with the architecture 🙂
Thank you. It’s a fascinating city.
I’ve not personally been to Rotterdam but my brother has and he really recommended it. I see what you mean about it being a patchwork, and it looks very different to Amsterdam, certainly more so than I expected!

It’s lovely but definitely not what I expected from a Dutch city.
