Do you have a love-hate relationship with your hometown? I know I do. I’ve lived in Oxford my whole life and I often find that I want nothing more than to escape for a while. In an effort to gain some new perspective on the place I grew up I decided to take advantage of the quieter Winter months to discover and remind myself of what the city has to offer. Here are some ideas to help you fall back in love with your hometown.

How to Fall Back in Love With Your Hometown

Take a Tour

The best way to learn about a new city is to take a tour, so why should it be any different in the city you live in? You could easily discover somewhere you never knew existed or find out a little bit of history you had no idea about.

Walk in a Different Direction

The chances are that if you live and work in a city you’ll probably find that you use the same routes on a regular basis, rarely veering off them to visit different areas. My tip would be to take a walk, head down a road you’ve never walked before and see what you find.

Discover the Great Outdoors

There could any number of places for you to visit: a local park, a botanical garden, a river or canal path. Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find somewhere quiet to escape to.

Play Tourist

Grab a guidebook and visit the top 10 recommended attractions.

Go For a Crawl

Do you know how many pubs, coffee shops or bookshops are in your hometown? Why not find out and then make a point of visiting them all? You may find a gem of a shop that you never knew existed or a brand new haunt to sit and grab a drink.

  1. I’ve lived in my hometown my entire life too, but I still love it so much. Doesn’t mean I don’t love to travel too, but I don’t think I ever could leave this place. Awesome post, I really liked it!

I know what you mean. I’ve never lived anywhere else so can’t really imagine moving, but I love exploring new places.

  2. this is great advice! I’m going to have to try this out, I do love playing tourist!

Thanks. Glad it was helpful. I suddenly realise I’ve stopped paying attention to the area when things open/close and I haven’t noticed for ages.

  3. This is great! My wife and I love to travel, but we were just talking about exploring our hometown more!

I’d definitely recommend it. Even if it’s just taking a walk to somewhere you haven’t been for a while, or taking a different route to work. Sometimes you notice things you’ve never seen before.

  4. Well, I’ve moved around my whole life. So things don’t get old because they’re always new. But I live in Los Angeles now and I’ve never taken a tour – I should do it sometime as it would be fun to see the city as a tourist.

I love taking tours in new cities, so even though it feels weird to take a tour in my hometown I’m definitely planning to do some this year (when the weather’s a little nicer).

  5. These are really great tips! Sometimes I get so bored with where I live, but I know moving won’t fix anything. Because soon I’ll just be bored with that place too! So you have to learn to love what you have!

100% agree. I love travel but sometimes just getting out of the house and heading in a different direction to normal can be an adventure.

  6. These are such smart tips! Specifically this time of year when it is cold and icy everywhere, I find myself wishing I lived just about anywhere else. That said, I think exploring a new area can really help to make it feel new and exciting, especially when that new area has delicious new restaurants! 🙂

Thanks! Glad you found it helpful. Food is definitely a bonus when exploring any area, whether it’s a food tour or visiting a new foodie place.
