Can we just cancel 2020? We’re just three months in and this has already been the one of the worst years for our generation. I’m not sure I really want to spend time reviewing the month of March, but I’ll have a go, just so I can attempt some form of routine and normality.

March: Reviewing the Month

The world seems like a very strange place at the moment, but it only really changed substantially for me last week.

The job I personally do requires me to be at my desk, in my office. It is not physically possible for me to work from home.
The company I work for had followed government guidelines and worked hard for a number of weeks to offer laptops and other technical options to as many people as possible for them to work from home.
We went quickly from having around 2500 people working on site to around 250.

Over the next week the numbers kept dropping, more and more laptops were handed out and less people were onsite.

And then that was that.
At 3pm last Monday we got the email to say that the offices would not be for the foreseeable future.

It felt weird to say goodbye to colleagues and not know how long it will be before we’re all back at our desks. To have a job that cannot be done from home adds a different spin to the whole situation. Besides intermittently checking emails I am effectively on paid leave (for the time being) until the world heals itself.

I am fully aware of how lucky I am though. I still have a job to go back to (whenever that may be) and that I am (currently) still being paid. So far I (and my parents) have steered clear of the virus (anyone who knows us will know this is a miracle) and we have food and shelter.

The UK is now in the middle of a three week lockdown, I am currently sat at my laptop pondering how to stick to a new routine, stay productive and keep my mind busy. I have a stack of books to read, podcasts to listen to, and blog posts to write. Despite this, I am trying to limit my screen time, I don’t want to be completely reliant on technology during this time so I’ll be doing my best to find alternative ways to spend my time.

How was March for you during this time?

Let me know in the comments.
