During my recent weekend trip to Belgium we took a day trip to Ghent. This pretty little city is also in the Flemish region of Belgium, just a 40 minute train journey from Brussels making it the perfect destination for a day trip.Â
Taking a Day Trip to Ghent
Like Bruges, Ghent dates back to the Middle Ages and is known for its charming canals, historic buildings, belfry, and cobblestone streets. However, Ghent does not receive the same amount of attention as other Belgian cities which I think is a pity as I found it delightful. The town still has a bit of that medieval flair in its architecture and atmosphere, but at the same time a modern and lively feel is aided by the variety of bars and restaurants.
Many years ago Ghent was actually one of the most important cities of Western Europe thanks to its flourishing its wool trade. However, as other cities in Europe began to prosper Ghent lost its ability to follow along during the two world wars and the Great Depression. It seems hard to believe that it was once the second biggest city in Europe, especially as you wander the small cobbled stone streets, but like Brussels and Bruges there’s no denying the city is full of historical richness.
Just like Bruges, Ghent is super easy to reach by train, the main station is Gent-Sint-Pieters, from the train station you can easily walk or take a tram into the city centre.
Everywhere you turn in this town it looks like it was pulled from the pages of a story book. With canals running through, a giant castle, and beautiful cathedral, Ghent is a feast for the eyes. The architecture hurtles you back in time. Additionally, most of the town centre is car-free so it’s perfect to wander around.
