I would hope you know by now that I’m a huge advocate for solo travel, it doesn’t matter where you go or for how long, but what I haven’t written about before are the negative aspects, the worst things about solo travel which could actually put people off.
The Worst Things About Solo Travel
Single Person Supplement
Three words that are likely to fill any solo traveller with dread. I can’t help feeling slightly discriminated against when I see that additional charge whenever I’m planning and booking a trip.
Hotels base their rates on double occupancy so if you’re alone you’ll be expected to pay more despite the fact that you’ll probably be using less water and electricity, but possibly more likely to use room service (or is that just me?)
Navigating Public Transport
If you’re in an unfamiliar country (and you don’t speak the language) using local public transport can be nerve-wracking.
Despite it being all part of the travel experience sometimes it would be nice to share the burden of map-reading, ticket-buying and generally trying to understand signposts. Also, it can be a little terrifying if you’ve gotten lost in a strange city and now have to get your bearings and find your way back to where you should be.
Managing Luggage
Due to the issues I have with my back I also have to make a conscious effort to ensure that my luggage is of a manageable size and weight. However, this doesn’t stop me occasionally having moments where I could do with an extra pair of hands to carry bags or to pull a case and give my body a bit of a break.
Travelling solo means you are always responsible for your own belongings, which is a damn nuisance when all you want to do is pop to the toilet and not have to heave everything into a tiny cubicle with you.
Sharing Memories
I have never (so far) experienced loneliness during my travels, but I have returned from trips and had a tiny pang of disappointment that I don’t have anyone to share those travel memories with.
What are the worst things about solo travel in your experience?
