Hoi An is an ancient city located in central Vietnam and is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country, attracting thousands of visitors every year, and it’s not difficult to see why visiting Hoi An should be on everyone’s travel bucket list.

A Quick Guide to Visiting Hoi An

One thing you should know about visiting Hoi An is that there is a fee of 120,000 VND to enter the Old Town, this goes to the maintenance and preservation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. This fee provides you with access to the town as a whole and then five individual tickets that allow you to enter specific sites such as the Japanese Bridge and some of the museums and temples. This fee is compulsory but not exactly enforced so it is entirely possible for you to enter the Old Town and spend the day (and night) walking around, enjoying the sights and delicious food without being asked to show your ticket, unless you are with a tour guide.

Staying

As far as I can tell accommodation options in the Old Town are extremely limited but there is a much wider variety in the city so when visiting Hoi An you should have no trouble finding an ideal place to stay regardless of your budget.

Eating

It is easy to see why Hoi An has been described as a foodie hot spot. Being in central Vietnam it offers examples of food from all across the country. From traditional Banh Mi for breakfast to spring rolls for a light lunch, large seafood dishes and even late night snacks when the market stalls emerge. You’ll never go hungry during your time in Hoi An but you’ll also find that you can’t try everything on offer during your visit.

Drinking

From the moment you arrive in Vietnam you’ll notice that coffee culture is huge and Hoi An is no different with a wide selection of cafes available. However, if coffee isn’t your drink of choice then there are plenty of teas and juices to choose from instead. The other thing you’ll find in Hoi An is that the Old Town really comes to life at night with bars open until late.

Doing

Explore the stunning Old Town during the day, wander along the streets among ancient yellow buildings often decorated with flowers and greenery. If you want to head out of the Old Town then you can hire a bike and head out into the surrounding countryside or even enjoy a day at the beach and relax on a sun lounger with a cold drink. Stay late into the night and admire the beautiful lanterns, some floating along the river, others drifting into the night sky.
