The ticket for Tokyo’s Robot Restaurant was included in the trip with Creative Escapes which was discounted in exchange for an honest review, the photos in the post were taken by me and the opinions expressed in this post are all my own.
We’re all entitled to do something shamelessly touristic during our travels, and one of the most touristy things you can do in the city of Tokyo is to attend a show at the famous Robot Restaurant. It may be a magnet for tourists but you will also never forget the experience.
Visiting Tokyo’s Robot Restaurant for the First Time
Location
The Kabukicho District is the largest red light district in Japan, however it is still an incredibly safe area to walk around, with bustling streets that are well-lit and full of bars, club and shops you won’t need to worry about feeling vulnerable.
Robot Restaurant itself is less than 10 minute walk away from Shinjuku Metro Station. Being such a busy area it could be easy to get lost but due to its popularity you won’t have a problem asking for directions should you need to, although the directions on Google Maps are incredibly easy to follow.
Booking
There are multiple ways in which you can buy tickets for Tokyo’s Robot Restaurant.
You can either buy tickets in person, although you could end up paying more than £60.00 per ticket. They are also available via the official website or from a third party website (I recommend this as it can be a little bit cheaper.)
The actual building where the show takes place is across the street from where you pick up your tickets so you need to arrive 30-60 minute beforehand to pick up tickets, arrive at the correct location, purchase any drinks you may want, and take photos.
Pre-Show
As soon as you arrive at the Robot Restaurant you’ll be ushered into a bar with a stage area, where you’ll be “welcomed” with a cabaret-style show with singing and dancing girls who provide the first round of entertainment, in a succession of outfit changes (some are a little more risqué than others.)
The audience is then led downstairs, every inch of wall, floor and ceiling decorated like the inside of a comic book. Rows of seating are on either side of the “stage” and then the real show begins.
I’m not going to say much more, as to be honest it’s difficult to put it into words, the show at Robot Restaurant is an explosion of colour, lights, noise and imagination.
Warning: if you suffer from epilepsy or strobe-induced migraines, this show is definitely not for you.
Don’t do too much research before you arrive. Arrive with an open mind. Enjoy the show for what it is.
What About the Restaurant?
Honestly, you don’t come here for the food. There are intervals throughout the show when the purchasing of food and drinks are available but everything is expensive and not particularly worth the money. I would stick to buying a drink at the bar when you arrive and buy food elsewhere either before or after depending on the time of the performance.
Is It Worth It?
It’s Japan. It’s Tokyo. You’ve come all this way, so if you’re going to head somewhere utterly touristy then let this be the place.
