I’ve only been for a weekend brunch at George Street Social a handful of times and even though I understand that it may not be everyone’s cup of tea (pun not intended) I’ve enjoyed it each time I’ve visited.

A Weekend Brunch at George Street Social in Oxford

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, the menu is simple and enticing and the food is a delicious way to start the weekend.

This particular building has actually been various coffee shops over the years, many years ago it was a Coffee Republic, then it changed (almost overnight) to a Java Coffee, and now it’s the George Street Social. Gone are the predictable furnishings of most generic chain coffee shops and instead is a distinct style that is fresh, modern and relaxed.

There’s an almost industrial feel, with exposed pipes, bare scuffed flooring, unpainted stair rails and chipped paint on the walls. Mismatched furniture keeps the atmosphere relaxed and informal.

However, upstairs is where the fun really happens, as you follow the cocktail-themed decorated staircase to the upper floor loaded with books, board games and even comfier seating.

If it is a weekend brunch that you’re after the food on offer is always of good quality, although the hot chocolate is served in a water glass and the pastries are kept uncovered (this is a slight bug-bear of mine.) However, if you’re ordering from the menu you won’t be disappointed. Pancakes with a variety of toppings, granola with yoghurt, and poached eggs are all available as part of an all day breakfast.

The cinnamon French toast with a medley of fruit, Maple Syrup and cream is a real indulgent treat.

Later in the day you might find you fancy one of the many burgers, a salad or some linguine, the choice is yours – it’s all here. Plus there’s a good cocktail menu and a nice selection of wines and beers should you want to make a night of it.

When they opened the team behind George Street Social made their intentions clear, they wanted to create somewhere where the people of Oxford could go, sit, eat and drink and create a community venue. I don’t visit here particularly often but whether you are a local or a visitor you will always find yourself welcomed and accepted.

Regardless of how long you spend here you are guaranteed to leave feeling like you’ve spent time with some friends.
