I don’t know about you but I definitely have a “type” when it comes to picking accommodation. It doesn’t matter where I am there are certain criteria I look for in a hotel that help me decide where I’m going to stay.
What I Look For in a Hotel
Location
I have no issue with accommodation not being in a central location as long as the destination has a good public transport system, this is always something I look in to researching a destination. However if the hotel is affordable I will generally choose to stay centrally to make the most of my time in the destination.
Character
For me this is one of the most important aspects. For many people accommodation is simply somewhere to lay their heads at night, but for me it is almost as important as what I do during the day. I love to arrive at a hotel or guest house and being wowed. I love to step into my room and be excited to spend time there.Â
Quality
I’m not suggesting that quality equates to five star prices but it definitely means that I’m looking for cleanliness, customer service and security.
Affordable
We all have our own idea of what is affordable. Not everyone wants to (or can) pay the same as the next person when it comes for accommodation. There are times when I am happy to pay for a basic single room, but there are also times when I’m happy to pay a little extra for a nicer room if I know it’s going to be special.Â
Comfort
This is important to me. Sleep is important to me, I simply can’t function if I haven’t slept well. A comfortable bed, clean sheets, and a nice bathroom are all key components to giving me a good night’s sleep.
Breakfast
It isn’t always essential, if I’m staying somewhere for more than a few days I may decide to have breakfast elsewhere. However, a free breakfast is always appealing especially if it’s more than just a few pastries and cold meat and cheeses.
Amenities
Whether it’s stunning décor and furnishings, complimentary toiletries, coffee-making facilities or little extras that make my stay special. If there are additional amenities on offer then these will be a nice little advantage that I look for in a hotel.

As someone how regularly stays in hotels for work rather than leisure, decent work space AND decent lighting in a room is also very high on my priority list.
It’s not something I ever really look at before booking but yes, a desk with a view always make me happy and I agree about the lighting.
Also, I’m starting to think that hotels should also declare how many plug sockets they have in each room. Nothing worse than having to search behind a bed or unplug all of the lamps in order to charge my phone/camera etc.
Honestly speaking, I never think too much before selecting a hotel for my accommodation. But since I have just married, I have to be very careful while selecting hotels. I am glad I found this article, it has really helped me in shortlisting the factors that must be considered before selecting a hotel!
I never thought accommodation would matter to me in the beginning. I never book luxury 5* but as I travel solo most of the time I like to feel that myself and my belongings are secure. Plus I love finding places with characters and supporting smaller local businesses in the various places I visit.
