As I write this post I’m sat in a coffee shop in Oxford, staring at the window watching a drop of condensation make it’s way down the pane of glass. It’s freezing outside and I realised that one way my favourite things to do at this time of year is to take some time once a week (usually at the weekend) to sit in a coffee shop with a hot drink. With an abundance of places to go, the aim of this post is to give you some suggestions of where to have a coffee in Oxford.
Where to Have a Coffee in Oxford
There are a number of reasons why I love heading to a coffee shop:
I enjoy settling down with a hot drink (and maybe a bite to eat) that I haven’t had to make myself.
If I can sit with my laptop or notebook and pen I always find myself a little more inspired.
I love a spot of people watching.
There are many places in Oxford where you could stop for a drink but in this post I have only included the local and independent business rather than the usual chain brands you would find in any city. I have also only picked the places that I have visited multiple times in the last year.
1855
Located in the Oxford Castle complex, 1855 is essentially a wine bar, but offers a delicious menu of tasty morsels and is great for a hot drink on a cold Winter’s evening.Â
Location: Oxford Castle, New RoadÂ
Barefoot Oxford
This gorgeous café is light and bright with cute details such as colourful tea pots and seasonal flowers, serving locally supplied coffee and beautiful homemade cakes.Â
Location: Walton Street, Jericho
Café Loco
Café Coco opened on Cowley Road in 1992 and has been winning awards and gaining loyal local support ever since. It is even said to serve the best cappuccino in Oxford.
Location: 85-87 St. Aldates
George Street Social
George Street Social is on a mission to offer fantastic food, drink and hospitality, so why not drop in for a delicious coffee, some great food as well as the additional offerings of Wi-Fi, bookshelves, board games, Lego or the chance to simply sit and watch the world go by.
Location: 35 New Inn Hall Street
The Grand Café
The Grand Café is an Oxford institution. According to Samuel Pepys’ Diary, it is the site of the first coffee house in England, and definitely still worth a visit, even if it’s just to admire the beautiful building whilst enjoying a good cup f coffee.
Location: 84 High Street
The Handle Bar Café
This quirky Café has bikes hanging off the ceiling, wooden floors and beams, large bright windows and a busy but cosy atmosphere.Â
Location:Â 28-32 St Michaels Street
The Missing Bean
The Missing Bean is an independently owned and run espresso bar, set up to bring artisan style coffee and a relaxed café atmosphere to the heart of Oxford.
Location: 14 Turl Street
The Nosebag
They have a reputation for being a predominately vegetarian restaurant but actually they offer a wide range of food. However stopping by for a coffee and a spot of people-watching is also a enjoyable activity on this small but semi-busy side street.Â
Location:Â 6-8 St. Michaels Street
The RoseÂ
Their food is a little on the pricey side, but The Rose is a beautiful, traditional looking tearoom which acts as a great spot for a coffee and a chat.Â
Location:Â 51 High Street
Turl Street Kitchen
Open early until late, Turl Street Kitchen offers relaxed eating and drinking with a focus on local and seasonal produce as well as independent drink suppliers.Â
Location:Â 16-17 Turl Street
Vaults and GardenÂ
If you fancy enjoying a cup of coffee in a beautiful (if not busy) setting, then this is the ideal location. Housed in St Mary’s Church, the café’s main dining area is located in one of the city’s oldest University buildings and a garden complete with glorious views of Radcliffe Square and other stunning building on all sides.
Location:Â University Church, High Street
