For the eighth post of the series, here are my suggestions on how to spend 24 Hours in Dorchester-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
For anyone travelling through the UK I would always recommend veering away from London. If you are visiting the county of Oxfordshire I would definitely suggest a stop in this beautiful village.Â
Dorchester-on-Thames
A beautiful, small village located just 8 miles from Oxford. With Roman and Saxon history its interest to historical groups is pretty clear. Despite the growth of towns and cities such as Wallingford and Oxford over the centuries, the location of Dorchester and the main roads meant it become a perfect choice for travellers and so is also ideal for any weekend visitors.
Getting There
I’ll be honest with you, if you don’t drive then Dorchester-on-Thames isn’t the easiest place to get to.
There is a bus from Oxford, but it doesn’t stop in the village and so requires a walk of about 25 minutes.
For my weekend I got the train from Oxford to Culham, this takes about 10 minutes and costs £5.00 each way, then I got a taxi to the village, this takes another 10 minutes and costs £10.00.
Where To Stay
There are three accommodation options in the village of Dorchester-on-Thames:
The George Hotel and The White Hart both have multiple rooms, dining rooms and conference facilities. The Fleur de Lys is much more of a pub which happens to have rooms available. You can check out my post here
Where To Eat
All of the hotels in the village have bars and restaurants, and all are worth a visit.
However, if you want to do a spot of village-watching then head to Lily’s Tea Room, it’s tiny but beautiful and everything is incredibly reasonably priced. You definitely need to try the homemade tomato soup with crusty bread and a delicious hot chocolate.
What To Do
Despite being such a small village there is in fact a regular calendar of events that might tempt you to a visit, including music concerts, flower shows and exhibitions. You can see it here.
A visit and walk around Dorchester Abbey is a must for anyone in the area.
Don’t think that you have to stay in the village though, due to its location it also means that there are plenty of walks available with fantastic views.
It wasn’t the most pleasant weekend weather-wise when I visited so long walks wasn’t really on my list of things to do. I did however take a stroll to Days Lock and then to Dyke Hills.
No matter how long your visit to Dorchester-on-Thames, just make sure you spend time walking around and admiring all of the pretty houses and peacefulness of this lovely part of the county.
